Robots are playing a role in more and more areas of society, and the interaction between humans and machines is becoming increasingly important. How can we put humans at the heart of robot development?
Since assistant robots will interact closely with humans, they must be compatible with them in terms of size and weight, but also in terms of strength and speed. To ensure safety while interacting with humans, it is imperative that humanoid robots respond to contact or obstacles in a fraction of a second. They also need to capture human movement and rapidly changing environments in real time. This poses enormous challenges for today’s robotics, both in terms of hardware and algorithm development as well as in terms of system integration.
This lecture provides an overview of current robotics trends, from lightweight robot technology to biologically inspired systems, whose functionality is based on the concept of human muscles. Furthermore, the challenges and current results in perception, cognition, artificial intelligence and autonomous planning for assistance robotics are discussed.
