The evaluation and economic use of data is changing football, the most popular sport in Germany. Since 2020, the German Football League (DFL) has been using cloud computing services to record and evaluate performance data from Bundesliga players in real time. As “Match Facts” on the TV screen or displayed in the Bundesliga app, they provide previously unavailable insights into the ongoing game: Who are the players with the strongest sprints or what is the probability of scoring? The stadiums are also becoming increasingly digital. Security concepts, ticketing or payment – fans are increasingly encountering (unnoticed) new technologies during their visit.
The data economy in professional football is expanding: What are the consequences for coaches and players? What will the digital fan experience of the future look like? Is football losing its attraction due to the increasing rationalization and economization of sport? Experts will discuss these questions at acatech on Tuesday, November 15th.
