Prospective Students

Self-driving cars, care robots, intelligent household appliances, autonomous irrigation and fertilization systems, smart digital assistants: artificial intelligence is finding its way into our everyday lives. Be at the forefront when it comes to helping to shape the great digital revolution.

As a branch of computer science, artificial intelligence, or AI for short, deals with the design and development of software systems that simulate aspects of human intelligence. These include e.g. Software systems for text, speech and image recognition, for process and action planning, for solving tasks using mathematical proof procedures, for interpreting and managing large, unstructured amounts of data, as well as self-correcting systems and interactive software systems that adapt to their users.

I find it exciting how tasks such as conducting dialogues can be formalized in such a way that good algorithmic solutions become understandable and efficient.

Projektinitiator

With the appropriate specialist skills, but also the knowledge of the ethical and legal aspects of the use of such systems, graduates are able to advance the digital transformation in a wide variety of industries and help shape it – be it in technology, business, medicine, environmental protection, social affairs , Law or science. Autonomous driving, robotics, search engine programming, setting up chatbots, forecasting share prices, even medical diagnoses or processes in agriculture are already supported and made possible by artificial intelligence.

Good to know

The university does not offer a special AI course, but there are a variety of opportunities for prospective students to acquire knowledge in this area. The following subject areas offer access to the sub-areas of computer science:

  • Digital everyday life
  • Digital economy
  • Mathematical foundations for data science and machine learning
  • Statistical basis and experimental data acquisition
  • Programming and algorithms
  • Information Retrieval and Natural Language Engineering
  • Computational intelligence for human-machine interaction
  • Digital medicine
  • Digital human sciences
  • Digital humanities
  • Digital school

The detailed module descriptions can be found under the menu item Teaching.

Who decides on my application?

Once your application has been received by the university, it will check whether you meet the academic and language requirements for admission. For subjects with restricted admission, a ranking list is created based on the applicants’ school and university grades and the best candidates on the list are admitted. For subjects with an aptitude test, your application will usually be checked by a selection committee of the institute to which you have applied. The criteria on which the selection of study applicants is based are laid down in the examination regulations for the subject

When will you receive notification of your admission?

If you were successful in the application process, you will receive a letter of admission from the university’s student office by post. In individual cases, it can take up to 2 months after the application deadline for your application to be checked and for you to receive the official response from the university.

When do I have to come to Regensburg to enroll?

The letter of admission states exactly when you have to arrive at the university at the latest. Dates of compulsory language courses, proficiency tests or placement tests are listed as well as the period of enrollment (matriculation) during which you are officially registered at the university and receive your student ID.

The topic of artificial intelligence offers a wide range of exciting areas of application, e.g. Robotics, autonomous driving, online trading, chatbots, image recognition, Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, agriculture, cybersecurity, medical diagnostics, search engines, forecasting share prices, computer games, logistics or finance and accounting.

Possible job titles:

  • Software developer for artificial intelligence / machine learning
  • Machine Learning Project Manager
  • Function development of automated driving
  • Data engineer for autonomous driving
  • Robotics Engineer
  • Developer Robotic Process Automation
  • Consultant machine learning and artificial intelligence
