Nicolai Harnisch is project manager in the “Technology” department at Bayern Innovativ from Nuremberg.
Bayern Innovativ – the “Gesellschaft für Innovation und Wissenstransfer mbH” (Society for Innovation and Knowledge Transfer) was established in 1995 jointly by representatives of Bavarian politics, business and science. Since then, Bayern Innovativ has been an important part of Bavaria’s innovation policy and the originator of many innovation impulses. The society offers various services to Network & Thinknet, Consulting & Grant and Events & Fairs. However, there is a special focus on small and medium-sized companies, which often lack the resources for expensive innovation management.

Bayern Innovativ supports research institutions and (medium-sized) companies with innovations. Main topics here are health, materials, mobility, energy and digitization. The focus is on networking and knowledge transfer between companies, research institutions and other stakeholders, especially through the organization of specialist events, workshops and seminars. In addition, we offer consulting services, especially to grants and innovation management.
Artificial intelligence plays a major role in all the mentioned fields of specialization – health, materials, mobility, energy and, of course, digitization. Regardless of whether it is for autonomous driving, diagnostics or intelligent power grids – so-called “smart grids” play a major role. We support our customers in harnessing the potential of AI for their company by showing them best practices, supporting them in their research and development activities through grant programs or developing use cases and strategies together with them.
Like the other Bavarian universities and colleges, the University of Regensburg is active in our network. University researchers give us and our company network an insight into the latest developments in research through specialist lectures. In turn, they can make contacts ito the industry at our events and workshops. Through our grant programs, colleges and universities can work together with industrial partners on practice-oriented research and development projects.
We are expanding our network and can reflect the latest research with our corporate clients.
Artificial intelligence is a key technology that offers great potential for the Bavarian economy and society. On the one hand, this certainly requires skilled workers who master and refine the technology. On the other hand, the risks and ethical concerns associated with the use of AI has to be accompanied by a balanced social discourse. This assumes that students and researchers from other disciplines (law, sociology, medicine, political science, etc.) are also familiar with basic concepts of AI.

Self-study with the help of relevant literature, programs such as “Elements of AI”, which make AI understandable even for non-computer scientists, and of course through the work with our networks.
Question 10: Do you personally find it easy or difficult to deal with topics that are related to AI?

The ethical aspects related to AI: On the one hand, of course, the question of the origin and quality of the data on which the algorithms are based (keywords: data protection and AI biases) and the question of how autonomous systems should react to specific dilemmas (e.g. trolley problem). I am also fascinated by the interaction between people and autonomous systems (Human-Computer Interaction) and the associated changes in the world of work and in everyday life.
